Working With Azuro

The Zimmerman’s love the outdoor pool and living space that’s part of their home in Arizona. For them, it’s a great place for family time as well as for entertaining. They’d always wanted to enjoy the same experience at their home in West Vancouver but had been strongly discouraged. They understood the job was either virtually impossible, prohibitively expensive, or both. Essentially, they’d given up until one day happening upon a dream pool at a birthday party their daughter attended. The owners were delighted to share Azuro’s card. “From the moment we met with Byron it felt right,” according to Jeff Zimmerman. “He was quietly confident and explained several projects he had completed with similar challenges. And seeing what a great job he’d done before, it was very reassuring.” The Zimmerman’s weren’t interested in cutting corners; they wanted top quality installations with a distinctive west coast feel. Through a careful planning process, which included several meetings and comprehensive computer diagrams and design specs, their initial impressions were confirmed. They were also impressed with Azuro’s innovative and practical solutions to the considerable logistical challenges.

Project Overview

The Zimmerman family live in a beautiful home nestled into the slope of the north shore mountains of West Vancouver. The property, with beautiful views of Howe Sound from the back yard, is essentially landlocked with a narrow walkway on either side and abutting another home at the rear of the garden.

Their dream to create an elegant outdoor living space with all the amenities, including a pool, seemed just that. A dream. Until they met with Byron and Scott Wilson of Azuro Concepts. Now, with a pool and rock-scaping carved seamlessly into the side of a mountain, their dream has been fully realized. According to Zimmerman, “Azuro exceeded my expectations exponentially. Our backyard is breathtaking.”

Once ground was broken, the ongoing enthusiasm, courtesy and professionalism of the entire Azuro crew, who became ‘like family’ continued to impress. “The whole process was beautifully orchestrated. Byron was very hands-on, in daily contact with the foreman and present for all the major work. We knew every step of the way what was happening. The communication was amazing.” Both parties recognized the need to make adjustments in the design plans once the project was underway and Byron’s innovative approach shone through. A buried pump house became the raised platform for a deck, now a favorite spot to relax. According to Zimmerman, “We have a pool carved out of the side of the mountain. It’s like a grotto, rock-scaped, with a beautiful overflow hot tub. It really is a part of the terrain now. It blends in seamlessly. The process was stress free and the outcome exceeded our expectations exponentially. Our backyard is nothing short of breathtaking.”

The Challenge

Access to the Zimmerman’s backyard is via a six foot wide passageway along the side of the home. The slope is handled by an impressive set of granite steps and a narrow foot path into the rear with an abundance of healthy plant life.

The Solution

The Azuro crew built an exceptionally sturdy ramp, more like a bridge, that spanned and protected the entire walkway and plant life. The bridge remained for the duration of the project and will be used in future projects. In addition to the significant flow of materials and workman along this ramp, twenty dump truck loads (26 tons of material) were removed in the excavation process with no damage to the granite steps, pathway or plant life. Bringing in the concrete created another logistical challenge. Azuro brought in a concrete boom pump with a 42 meter long hose that was fed right over the Zimmerman’s home and into the backyard. Problem solved.
